Getryggen - Ridge formed by ice river material

Getryggen is a ridge that was formed around 10,000 years ago when the last inland ice sheet melted, but at a time when the ice melt paused and the ice stood still for a while. The meltwater then rushed through a tunnel in the ice, leaving behind gravel, stones and sand. The shape of the tunnel gave the ridge its pointed structure, which resembles a goat's back.

The ridge is constructed in such a way that the coarsest material (stones and gravel) was deposited first, while lighter material (sand) ended up on top. The area also has traces of kettle holes or lakes, formed when large blocks of ice broke away from the ice, became embedded in gravel/sand and then melted away. Visitors to the site can enjoy a 3 km hiking trail on top of Getryggen with some fine views over the Indalsälven river.
