Prästberget, walk on a magma chamber!
Up at Prästberget, you are walking on a 1.5-billion-year-old magma chamber that can be likened to a giant balloon. The chamber was formed by molten rock, magma, which pushed up from the Earth's interior and stopped about 3 km from the Earth's surface. Since then, everything above the magma chamber has weathered and eroded away, and now we can see straight into it. Something unique and special about Ragunda is that two molten magmas rose at the same time, one red and one dark, and these formed different types of rock. The red one became granite, and the dark one became gabbro.
In many places in Prästberget, you can see how these two have ‘mingled’, i.e. collided with each other and created beautiful patterns in the rock. You can also see the unusual granite called Rapakivi, which means rotten or dirty stone, which is flesh-red with large salmon-pink crystals. You can also see how crystals have grown in cavities in the granite and gabbro. At the top there is a nice resting area where you can enjoy the forest and the nice views.
